It is estimated, Islam began to come alive in Maluku in 1400 ‘s. This is evidenced by a mosque which stood for seven centuries in Ambon island. The Wapauwe mosque is located in the subdistrict of Central Maluku Regency Leihitu, this is one historical evidence that marked the development of Islam in the province of a thousand islands.

The mosque was founded in 1414 and to this day it is still standing. Originally the mosque called the mosque of Wawane, built on the slopes of the mountain because of its Wawane by the sons of the Islamic Sultanates of Jailolo Moloko Kieraha (four mount Moluccas), Pernada Jamilu. Now, ordinary people call it the Wapauwe Mosque. The old Wapawue mosque which is very historic and always covered wonders. Not just old, but the oldest in Maluku since it has existed since the year 1414 M.

15th-century mosque, it is the oldest mosque in Indonesia and become historical evidence of Islam in the Moluccas. In fact, her age exceeding the mosque of Demak, the year 1467, which is considered as the Centre of the spread of Islam in Java.

WAPAUWE MOSQUE BUILT WITH STEM OF SAGO.

The mosque that still retained their original form that stands above the ground called Teon Samaiha by locals. It is located between the settlements and Kaitetu shape is very simple. Its architecture is very unique and elementary nature. The mosque was built without nail that unites each of its parts so that it can be dismantled-pairs. To connect every part of the building, the designer uses only wooden pegs. This construction allows the moveable mosque.

In terms of its architecture, it could be that this is the only mosque that is made from the stem of sago and defended its authenticity over the centuries. Standing on a plot of land by a local citizen named Teon Samaiha. It is located between the settlement Kaitetu.

Gaba-gaba-walled construction (stem of dried sago), it still works well as a place to pray, although there is already a new mosque in the village. Mains building Mosque Wapauwe only 10 x 10 metres, while the annex which is sized porch 6.35 x 4.75 m. Typology building is shaped like four square.

A GLIMPSE OF THE EXISTENCE OF THE MOSQUE WAPAUWE

Mihrab-sized 2 x 2 metre mosques such as masjid generally in Java and Bali. The pulpit of the mosque made of wood shaped like a chair. Its size is high enough so that the pulpit stairs added. On the upper part is decorated arches and wood carving. Drum made of wooden logs intact with a diameter of 2 m. Bedug tied with rota and hanged on the block on it.

On the inside there is the characteristic of the building joglo, namely saka guru. Saka teacher is the four pillars which are located in the central Javanese traditional buildings. The roof is also affected by the building of Java, namely in the form of the roof of the terraced tajug. Saka teacher is using wood with size 22 x 22 cm square. On top of the roof there are teacher saka pyramid with a slope sharp enough, and then followed with the roof beneath its sloping roof, just like traditional building Java. The roof is made from sago palm leaves. The Spire is made of a cylindrical wood with grooves and molding.

In between the roof and the roof above which there is a hole underneath the window that serve as air vents. The bottom of the roof is projected outward and form part of the ellipse as the leaves. At each end there is a carving of a bearing the word ” God ” and ” Muhammad ”.

In this mosque saved Mushafs reportedly included the oldest in Indonesia. The oldest is the Mushaf Imam Muhammad Arikulapessy who finished (hand) in 1550 and without illumination (garnish edge). While the other is a Mus Mus Nur Judy who finished in 1590, and also without illumination as well as hand written on European paper products.

WAPAUWE MOSQUE HAS SUPERNATURAL ELEMENTS ( Switch In The Occult )

Originally named Masjid Wapauwe Mosque Wawane because it is built on the slope of Mount Wawane as a medium for the propagation of Islamic  in five of the country around the mountains of Wawane i.e. Assen, Wawane, Atetu, Tehala and Nukuhaly. But then the mosque suffered displacement place in 1614 A.d. to Tehala which is 4 km east of Wawane. Because of the nature of these unseen above, many citizens who utilize this Ramadan to perform Maghrib to tarawih in Wapauwe Mosque. In fact, the citizens of the city ever took themselves to prayer in the mosque of Wapauwe.
