Bali is one of the famous province with diversity of culture and exoticism of the attractions. Between culture and sights in bali like into one inseparable unity and complement each other. They become a magnet towing concern tourists both local and foreign tourists to come to the island of Bali. One of Bali’s arts culture, be it art painting, dance, art or sculpture. Every art in Bali have distinctive features that cannot be found in other areas. One of the dances that are well known and has been around since the 1950s is the Pendet Dance.
Pendet Dance created by a maestro dance of Bali , namely I Wayan Rindi (1967), Rindi I Wayan Pendet renders as the composer of sacred dances which can be showed at any religious ceremonies. The origin of the Pendet dance is created for the cult that is widely performed in the temple, a Hindu place of worship in Bali, Indonesia.
AS A SACRED DANCE OF PENDET DANCE & WELCOMING GUESTS IN BALI
Each dance has a different function, there is a sacred dance function i.e. the complement of religious ceremonies and there are also dances that serve as entertainment. Pendet dance belongs to the category once sacral, but in 1961, the Pendet dance is created and changed its shape to be like now. Pendet dance is a dance that originally was changed to sacred dance entertainment by adding the number of dancers and little changed of the movements.
Pendet is a dance symbolising the fall of goddesses of heaven. Pendet dance is usually performed in a group i.e. 5 or more people and performed by the young girl in the hall of the temple. Dancers Pendet bring flowers in a small bowl, then they spread such interest to the area of the temple. This dance is a symbol of welcome the gods at religious rituals in Bali. Pendet is typically have a simple dance movement. This movement is the basis of traditional Balinese dance movement.
However, along with the times, some artists in Bali Island changed the Pendet being dance of welcome greeting, but still carrying the Pendet sacred and religious elements that characterize the Pendet dance. Pendet is now a welcome dance for tourists visiting Bali.
PENDET MOVEMENT IS VERY SIMPLE & EASY TO LEARN BY EVERYONE
Pendet Dance is not like other dances performances that require intensive training, Pendet may be performed by everybody, be it men and women, adults as well as girls. This dance is taught simply by following the movements and rarely done at “banjar”. The young girl followed the movement of the more senior women who understand their responsibilities in providing a good example.
Therefore, the Pendet dance is often done en masse by all walks of life from childhood until adulthood. The girls follow the movements of older women, in which they learned the responsibilities each and provide a good example. Expertise developed over time. As a religious dance, Pendet is typically displayed in the religious ceremonies at temples.
The two function of Pendet Dance
Seen in terms of functionality, pendet has 2 functions as a guardian of the dance usually showed in temples at a time when there is a ceremony, and the second function is that of “bali-balihan” dance commonly performed as welcome guests.
The movement and the Clothing is an important element in the Pendet, in staging Pendet requires some sort of fashion and also supplies the property. As for the various gear clothing and property Pendet is prada Belt, Anteng, fabric songket, and Basins. whereas in terms of the movement of the dance, the dancers pendet the young girl is just going through the motions of senior female dancers are there in front of them
The dancers Pendet using other means like a Balinese dancer. The most common means is carried by the dancers Pendet Dance is a container (sangku/Bowl) that it placed a “ulatan janur” that contain various colorful flowers. At the end of the dance, the flowers brought dancers will be dissipated by the dancers in the presence of guests to greet guests or invite the Holy Spirit to enjoy the show. Pendet is accompanied with typical Balinese “gamelan” i.e. gong Pendet, which makes the more riveting to tourists both local and foreign tourists.
