Pasola Festival is the tradition of Sumba community which famous in the World

Pasola Festival determined based on the month and through meetings the Rato (indigenous pastor). The Origin Of The Word Pasola

Etymologically, Pasola is derived from the word sola or hola which means Javelin or spear. Then basic word sola or hola got the prefix pa which means mutual. So the Word can be translated as mutual Pasola throws a spear or Javelin attack.

Sumba Pasola Tradition History

According to folklore the Sumba developing hereditary, the tradition of the Pasola originated from the story of a beautiful widow named Rabu Kaba in Kampung Waiwuang who has a husband named Umbu Dulla, one of the leaders in the village Waiwuang.

One day, his wife Dulla Umbu asked permission to go to sea with two other indigenous leaders namely Ngongo Tau Masusu and Yagi Waikareri. But on the way, three of them changed his mind and finally decided to go to the South coast of Sumba to farm rice. Therefore, they do not go home for a long time so the people they thought they had died at sea. Any people held a ceremony of mourning. Under these circumstances, the beautiful widow of the late Umbu Dula, Wed Kaba involved romance with Teda Gaiparona, a man from the village Kodi.

Teda Gaiparona intend to marry Rabu Kaba but was opposed by the families of both sides so their elopement.  Some time later, Umbu Dula returned home along with the other two leaders. It would be a surprise Umbu Dulla mendapatin his wife had and by others. He tried to invite his wife came home but declined because it was already in love with Teda Gaiparano.

To smooth their marriage, Teda Gaipora change to the Umbu Dulla numerous belis [a kind of dowry] used to be paid to the Kaba in the form of horses, the Wednesday cattle, water buffalo, and other valuables. After the entire belis repaid, the couple’s marriage ceremony Rabu Kaba and Teda Gaiparona can take place. At the end of the wedding party, Umbu Dulla asking citizens to have a party Waiwuang penagkapan nyale [caicing Ocean] with carrying out the traditions of the pasola to forget his sadness that had lost a wife.

There are two traditions or rituals which is also a complementary Pasola i.e., traditions Bau Nyale and the Pajura ritual. Bau Nyale, held the morning before Pasola. Bau nyale is a tradition catch worms laut. Pasola Ceremony always starts with a series of customary procession Nyale arrest as a form of gratitude towards God’s abundant grace as the success of the harvest. Nyale is vernacular for a sea worm if appears in large quantities on the beach, then this is a good sign made of local people. The emergence of Nyale is a symbol of prosperity for the people of Sumba and surrounding areas. The ceremony took place on full moon in the night of the arrest Nyale  and led by The Rato, indigenous leaders of Sumba.

After the arrest the marked success Nyale with many catches and then counciled before the Assembly The Rato, then after that ceremony Pasola can be implemented.  Pasola is implemented in a vast field as a “battleground” and was witnessed by the entire residents and tourists both local and international.

Each group involved in the festival of the Pasola consists of 100 young men armed with  sola [Spears] made of blunt-pointed wood and a diameter of approximately 1.5 cm. second group these youth face each other and each other like a real battle between the two groups of Knights of Sumba. In practice, the tradition festival Pasola not rarely ate the victim’s soul. In the belief of Marapu, the victim of a crash is the one who gets a punishment from the gods for having committed sins and mistakes and the blood that come out can be considered  signifies soil fertility and crop on the upcoming planting season.
